Obedience FAQ's

Should My Dog Know Obedience?

Yes, everyone's dog should know how to do the basic commands, come, sit, down, stay, and be able to walk on a loose lead. It not only makes your dog a better companion but could save his life.

When can I start to teach Rover these things?

We have classes designed to help everyone starting with an 8-week-old puppy. The Puppy class is an ideal place to start for the first time owner. You can ask questions about housebreaking, nipping, jumping on people, and how to stop bad habits before they get out of control. Learn how to get your puppy to walk on lead without pulling you around like a sled dog. We show you how to get your puppy to come to you willing and at full speed.

What if my dog is no longer a puppy?

You may start out in one of our Beginner classes where our Instructors and Assistants show you how to teach your dog to listen to your commands. We have dogs from 5 months to over 10 years old learning to become better family and community members. We have children as young as 10 years old and senior citizens learning how to control Rover.

Can my dog and I repeat a class?

There is nothing wrong in repeating a class. Sometimes that playful or nervous Rover needs to settle down more before going to the next level. When you repeat a class you'll learn new skills and Rover will become a better partner. Some dogs learn faster then others. Never feel as though you have failed just because you have decided to repeat a class.

What if I want to compete with my dog?  Can the club help me?

We have classes for all skill levels of obedience, agility, and flyball. Just keep checking our class schedule because each quarter we offer a different set. Upper level classes do have requirements the student must meet.

What if I have been working with my dog at home?  Must I start over?

If you are new to the area or have been training elsewhere we can arrange for Rover and you to meet with our Training Director or someone on that committee. They will put you through a small test to measure your dog's skill level. They will then recommend a class that is right for you and us.

Who are your instructors?

We are all members of WSDTC who have been training our own dogs. Many of our members have earned numerous titles while others just like to work with their dogs making them a better family companion. All instructors and Assistants are people who are willing to share their knowledge with the public so you and your dog can have a happier life together. Our skills at instructing may vary and so may our classes but we all follow a basic guideline for each class.

I've been watching TV where they show dogs doing various sports other then obedience. Does WSDTC offer instructions in these areas and if so which ones?

At this time we only offer Obedience,Rally, Agility, Flyball and Tracking. Rally, Agility, Flyball and Tracking have pre-requistes in obedience.  Although our members do have titles in Field Trials, Hunting Tests, Herding, Lure Coursing, and Earthdog our club is not able to offer classes in these areas at this time.
