Canine Good Citizen/Therapy Dog International

This is a way to show people that your dog is a good companion and a credit to the community. It also shows that you are a responsible dog owner.

To receive an AKC CGC title and certificate, a dog must pass a 10-step test. Passing the test confirms that a dog has the training and demeanor to behave in a mannerly fashion at home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs.

The test requires a dog to calmly allow a stranger to approach and converse with its handler; to show no sign of resentment or shyness while being petted by the stranger; to permit the stranger to brush or comb it, and to examine its ears and feet. The dog must heel on a loose lead (on either side of the handler), as well as demonstrate that it can move politely in pedestrian traffic. The dog must sit or down and stay on command, and come when called.

The dog must show no more than a casual interest when two handlers approach each other, shake hands, and speak. Although the dog may express a natural curiosity or even appear slightly startled, it should accept, without panic or anger, distracting situations such as something noisy being dropped or a jogger running nearby. The final test demonstrates the dog's ability to stay in the company of a stranger for three minutes while its owner is out of sight. Mild agiation is acceptable, but the dog must not whine, bark, or pace unnecesarily.

Any breed or mixed breed can earn a CGC. The dog just has to pass all 10 parts of the test. If your dog does not pass the test the first time, you can always try again later. There is a small fee charged for the test. Once your dog has passed, you will receive a certificate with your dogs name on it. You might want to check with your homeowners insurance. Some will give you a discount once your dog has passed Canine Good Citizens.
